Palma Real: Situation exceptionnelle
Amazing locationn
The staff were awesome ! The resort was in a perfect location to wonder around and explore. Make sure you get a massage while you are there.. she's awesome ! The food was very repetitive but it is very inexpensive to eat out at restaurants where the foot is great. We had a lobster dinner for my birthday for $15 pesos.. can't go wrong with that ! All in all good resort , staff were great, the only complaint is that I wish I was aware that the main pool was closed for renovations while we were there.

Roc Barlovento Hotel Snapshot
My husband and I stayed the week of October 7th to October 14, 2017 at Roc Barlovento, Varadero, Cuba. The city of Varadero had just been hit with Hurricane Irma. There was a lot of damage done. I believe the locals, hotel staff, army and university students shut down Varadero for two weeks in order to clean up the fallen trees, debris and try to work with damaged infrastructure. The hotel surprisingly was up and running without too much damage. The staff and locals were in good spirits despite the damage and shortage of certain staples in their diets. The hotel was out of tomatoes and bananas but other than that had a good choice of foods. My husband and I brought an extra suitcase full of clothes and toiletries for the locals. We went to the market downtown and the locals were happy to be selling their awesome keepsakes again. The airport was almost empty when we came through as Westjet was the only airplane in on October 7th at the time we arrived. All and all, we did have some issues with the bed being too low and hard. The resort was full due to other hotels not being up and running so reception was unable to change our room and was unable to address our concern. Would I return, yes it was within walking distance to the main street of Varadero and the resort itself was very clean and the hotel staff were very friendly.

Very bad

Very good hotel overall.
For the food, there is little choice but very good food. The beach is not in the hotel but a 3 minute walk and with a beach bar dedicated to Palma Real. The only downside is the road that passes close to some rooms makes a little noise even at night, but the stunning water views compensate. I easily give a 4/5.

Keeps on getting better!
I dont recall how many times I have been to Palma Real but during my many trips, I have gained a lot of friends from both staff and fellow vacationers. This trip my friends and I noticed the food seemed to have improved. I was much hotter and seemed to have more flavor. We were also faced with hurricane Irma half way through our stay. The employees reassured us we would be safe from catastrophes at Palma Real because the hotel had been used as a shelter for others in then past due to it's slight elevation, short buildings and strong structures. We watched workers preparing by putting up plywood panels for extra protection while we waited for our carrier, Air Transat to come for iur safe evacuation. Since the aftermath I have heard there was minimal damage and things should be back to usual at Palma Real in the very near future.

All the pillows had black mold
The negatives: we had three separate rooms and all 6 of our pillows (not the covers) had black mold spots on them. The sheets had a stench of dampness everyday. Some days there was no hot water at all. One day I was showering with cold water and it shut off on me mid shower so I had to rinse my whole body in the sink. Hint to hotel management: stop being so cheap and change your pillows for pete's sake.
On the positive side: staff were very nice - restaurant servers only started being nice once they caught onto the fact that we were tipping; to our amusement, they wouldn't even look at us the first two days when we needed something. Food was good. I feel like hipster westerners who come to cuba are food snobs. I found it delicious.

Awesome Resort
Amazing Resort and would definitely go back to this same place. Location perfect to starting of downtown to the market. Buses right next door to catch daily to go from one end of Varadero and back. Buses stop every 30 minutes and you pay $5 CUC and can ride and get off all day long until 9:00 pm. Resort staff friendly and helpful. Smaller resort with little under 400 rooms, but bigger not always better. No long waits or line ups. Not a lot of people running around in chaos. More low keyed place if that is what you want. Adults only and no kids. Not a Hilton hotel, but everything is clean. Rooms are clean, bedding clean, clean towels and shower does have hot water. Did not have any issues or problems to deal with. 2 Pools and a low lying down pool (for just lying in on your back which was neat). One main buffet which was clean and food "OK" for CUBA. Always good choices and variety daily. Tour arrangements right on site. Highly recommend the JEEP Tour which was a full day and well worth the price. Well organized and coordinated. Was perfect! Trip to Havanna by taxi which was cheaper than bus tour and you got one on one personal experience. This is recommended as well. Overall, a great experience. Local markets were great and close to where this resort it. Other resorts further down, but would not have the easy access that this place does and not the busy of bigger resorts. I would definitely stay here again.
Our local travel agent Kevin Dupuis was great and always readily available by phone or email. He was great in setting up the best possible deal and location based on what I wanted. I would use him again to assist my travel planning.

Worse than advertised
We were prepared for a three star, as advertised, since we were only going to be there for a few days, we could have handled boring food, or smaller accommodations. But we were almost at the end of our rope after only just one day! If you were lucky enough to find a bartender that could mix a drink, they probably didn't have the ingredients required (e.g. - there was no wine at all). The husband loves authentic Cuban mojitos and only got one on the first night. After that when he asked, they just shook their head 'no'. We stayed in one of the older, smaller bungalows and there were numerous gaps to the outside and we ended up absolutely COVERED in bug bites. The bed broke for no apparent reason - it was likely already broken and band-aided together. The air conditioner kept shutting off for periods of time and we couldn't make it come back on, like maybe they programed it that way. There was a key to the safe that also required a code, which was the room number (given on the tag) plus the letter A - so everyone's were the same, don't lose it! We actually left the breakfast buffet one morning because there was almost nothing left and it was only halfway through service. I thought a juice and a coffee would do the trick but the juice was all gone and so were the coffee cups. The only table service we saw the whole time was at the a la carte. Speaking of buffet, in the 7 times we've been to Cuba, we have never had to stand in line to wait for a table to get in to the buffet. We asked for an a la carte for our last evening and they were reluctant to give it because they don't like to have to re-set the tables. We insisted that we didn't mind waiting and that it was our last night after all and she allowed it. The after hours snack bar was a basket of ham and cheese sandwiches sitting out on a table - we didn't try any of those. There was garbage blowing around everywhere. There were no wifi cards for the first two days. So for this and other similar things, they wanted us to walk down the beach to the next resort and get what we need from them. I asked if we were allowed to use their services too, but no. Maybe during peak season they have a two star capacity but this was more like a 1 star. Someone seriously needs to re-evaluate this resort's star rating.

Wonderful peoples but...
This hotel is 19 years old and in desperate need of love. The employees are very nice and will do a lot to accommodate you. The food is not the best but was very decent. This hotel should be a 2 stars in my opinion, i had to change rooms 3 times to find a correct one. The last room had everything working but one of the 2 beds was totally worned out. The shows at night are good and diversified the animation team are doing a good job. The beach is Varadero beach so they are superb :)

The rooms are older but clean. The grounds are very well maintained. The food was very good in all the restaurants. The staff are very very friendly. Beach lots of seaweed but cleaned everyday. Hotel just needs some upgrading that would make it a 4 star. Would I go back probably not but a place for a quiet vacation. Thank you O'Neil for your help in booking.

Starfish Cayo Largo: Vraiment surpris !
Really Surprised!
The hotel is older (like most Cuba hotels) but very clean, we had a beautiful ocean view with balcony doors. Our friends did have to move rooms due to the air conditioner not working but the staff made is stress free. Grounds we nice, entertainment ok but we had blast with the activity staff and all our new friends we met.
If your looking for a quieter type of resort or have kids this would be a good place to go.
Beach wasn't as smooth as beaches on the main land but the waves were awesome to play in.
As for food, besides the boring breakfast this has been the best we've eaten at. Fresh fish, lobster and calamari, even their Cuban soup had flavor!!
7 of us went down and would we go back? All of us said yes, a real good bang for the buck.
