Mainly good, but not my personal cup of tea
This was our second stay at Melia Las Dunas and, in all honesty, I don't really have any major complaints. If you've stayed at resorts in Cuba before, then you know the drill re: keeping your food expectations moderate -- though I have to say that the Romantico a la carte quite possibly provided my husband and I with the best a la carte food we've ever had when visiting a resort in Cuba. In addition, the Beer Garden serves what my husband (a DIE HARD hamburger afficianado) says are burgers that rank in his top 5 burgers of all time. Don't underestimate the gravity of that statement :)
The grounds, the amenities (lobbies etc.) and rooms were very well-tended and comfortable and, of course, you can't go wrong with the beaches on Cayo Santa Maria.
So why am I sounding kind of luke-warm about the whole thing?? Well, I guess I'm just an old lady (in my 50's) but I think I'm getting to the point where I like my resorts just a bit smaller, a bit quieter, and a bit more personal. Melia Las Dunas is by no means "mammoth" (if you 've ever, say, been at a Mayan Bahia resort, for instance) -- but it was still a bit too busy for me. The number of guests mean that most staff simply can't give that "personal touch" even though we DID have some staff who went above and beyond and remembered us from day to day (Hurray for Donna in the Lobby bar!).
Having said that -- if you're younger than we are -- or younger at heart than we are -- or not quite so tired and in need of simple boring sitting in peace and quiet -- then you'll love Las Dunas. Clients there are a bit on the younger side and there is a lot of good entertainment -- a lot of vibrancy -- that I think appeals to the under 40 set. Don't get me wrong, though. If our one week in February wasn't my one and only week away from an otherwise truly hectic life, I'd probably be really up for the action that Las Dunas provides. It's a very good all-round resort and I have no complaints about it -- I just like my resorts a little "sleepier".

Taste of Paradise
This resort is the ultimate getaway if you're looking for rest and relaxation. We stayed for a week in mid February 2015 and got exactly what we were looking for: a small, quiet resort with beautiful beaches and accommodating and attentive staff. I've done a lot of traveling throughout the caribbean, mostly to the islands, and the staff at the Melia Buenavista were by far the friendliest that I've ever encountered. From our Butler, Lucas, to the chambermaids, pool and restaurant staff, everyone took such great care of us.
The resort itself was stunning, with three beautiful beaches and an abundance of available loungers. Our room was exactly as the website's pictures had depicted it, the perfect combination of modern and cozy, and the outdoor shower was one of our favourite features. Even on colder days, it was a nice way to feel a little more connected to nature while experiencing 5 star comfort.
Even though we purposely sought out a smaller resort, there was still so much for us to do. We visited the Los Dunas market, the two sister resorts (which were nice, but far too large and commercialized for our liking... we couldn't wait to get home to Buenavista), as well as took advantage of the excursions made available to us by our Nexus representative; our trip to Trinidad being one of the highlights of our vacation.
Overall, our stay at the Melia Buenavista was a wonderful and memorable experience and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a little bit of luxury and a break from their regular day-to-day.

Melia Las Dunas: Très bonne station, chambres 3*, installations 4*
Pretty good resort, 3 * rooms 4* facilties
Air Canada flight from Halifax, excellent, sail thru customs and on the bus. About 30 of us arrive at the front desk and waited an hour, so slow, someone complained about something and the entire process stopped, where are the other front desk workers? Same thing the next day, we stood in front of two guys for 15 minutes and were ignored! Holy Cow, I've never been ignored at a front desk, we walked away, came back to be ignored again. Dear Mr. Manager, put 8 people on the front desk, they don't cost the hotel they pay in customer satisfaction. Anyways, the room is a rundown 3 star with maintenance issues, 5 flushes, sink leaks, the stopper in the tub won't pop open, pressure after 10 am poor the typical 3 star stuff. The facilities are 4 to 5 star, food is good, beer garden and Charcoal grill is excellent and I'd return just for that. Pizza restrurant is not great, they need a new rescipe for the tomato sauce. Buffets are huge! Pannini presses, 3 egg stations, blue cheese. Supper is really quite good, 4 star. 3 places serve sit down breakfast, 2 snack bars at the pools and beer garden. Beach is excellent, you cannot walk from one end to the other, just too far. I'd go back in April-May when the water is calm and warm tho. Adult pool is quiet until 3 pm then comes to life with football, music and drinking activities. We did a Havana trip $250 CND, Flight, bus, meal, English tour guide, wow! Was a long day 6 am to 11pm but worth the effort. Don't go Monday, all museums are closed. This really was a highlight of our 15 Cuban trips and would highly recommend it. Went to the 2 shopping towns, it's a nice break but nothing special. Saw this rock band with Dany Fernandez on guitar. He must be a son of Carlos Santana and Jimi Hendricks, unfriggingbelieveable. If anyone has a video of his performance please send it to me and I'll post it on you tube, he is a superstar in waiting. I'd return to the resort just to see Dany again and see if I can walk the entire length of the beach.

Some new issues, still fairly nice
Last year was the best at this resort as numerous improvements had been made. This was our fourth visit. This year there is a new manager and there were some marked deficiencies such as lack of mosquito control (everyone in our party had literally dozens of bites) and there was no running water in the rooms on numerous occasions. On the plus side the staff is marvelous and the food quality seems to have improved. The cost of packages to this resort have also increased significantly (30 to 40%) over the years. I suspect this is due to its increased popularity as the resort was fully booked.

Melia Cayo Santa Maria: Belles plages

Melia Las Dunas: Un voyage extraordinaire !
Amazing Trip!
Before we left for Melias Las Dunas, I looked at all of the reviews and decided that this was the place to go! Had a couple of negative reviews before we arrived but tried to keep it positive. We arrived and found that the grounds were kept beautifully, the rooms were quite nice and the food was much better than I had hoped for. There are so many options for foods - pizza restaurants at both of the large pools offering sandwiches as well. We slept in on more than one occasion and decided to eat at the 24/7 (all day breakfast) because we had missed the buffet. The calamari is very good there as well! We usually went to the adult beach (far right) but when we wanted entertainment ventured to the middle beach. There are bars at each of the beaches but the middle beach has a grill as well for sandwiches. There is usually a line up so we walked up to the 24/7 or the outdoor grills at the end of the boardwalk (2 minute walk) to get food while on the beach. The outdoor grills open at 12:00 p.m. and are amazing - grilled seafood/meat/veggies, etc. There are so many options for food, it would take you a week to figure this out as well, there are the 3 Al La Carte restaurants - seafood, Italian and Oriental were the ones we went to and were not disappointed! The beaches are absolutely beautiful! I give this resort a 4+ star!!! Entertainment was awesome! The aquatica show was amazing - they had Cuban bands playing most nights in the lobby area as well as piano bar in the early afternoon. Our family had an amazing time and will most definitely go back!!! By the way, I walked the beach every morning to check out the other hotels in the same category and they cannot hold a candle to Melias Las Dunas - either for the food or the grounds! Thank you to the staff of Melias for making our trip so awesome!!! :)

Exceeded expectations
This was my sixth time to Cuba and the first for my boyfriend. From beginning to end we had a fantastic time. The staff were always very friendly and extremely helpful, the grounds were meticulously maintained and beautifully kept. We lucked out and had beautiful, sunny days and it just rained at night. The beach is rocky, which suited us just fine because it was amazing for snorkelling. The beach itself is gorgeous and the water the most stunning blue-green colour. The location of this resort is right by an incredible reef teeming with life that the catamaran trips take you to go snorkelling at, or you can swim there yourself from the beach. The pool was lovely, although we didn't use it at all as we are beach people. The rooms were very nice; however, there was one issue that plagued us the entire time: cockroaches. We did not complain to the management about it--we were in the tropics, after all--but it was obviously a problem as they sprayed our room without us mentioning it at all. Unfortunately, the spray did absolutely nothing and we had cockroaches every day and every night. A huge one greeted us by sprinting across the floor when we got to the room on our first night, and we saw them day and night. It was a bit unsettling and we had to be extra careful when packing to go home. That, however, was the singular issue we had. As for the restaurants; well, the food was simply wonderful. This was the first time in six Cuban trips that the food was really something to write home about. The variety of foods was overwhelming and great. The specialty restaurants did an excellent job and we had no problems booking them. The Japanese was the standout for us, meal-wise and entertainment, too. The teppanyaki style was accurately duplicated and delicious. Our transfers to and from the resort were right on time and check-in and check-out went without a hitch. The bars and staff were very accommodating and quick, though they did pour with a heavy hand and if you are a lightweight you need to specify that you don't want too much alcohol in your drink. There was always food and drink available, and also a gazebo with bottles of champagne and wine on ice and snacks in the evenings in the lobby bar to just help yourself. The entertainment was fair; they did a decent job. This was by far the nicest resort I've been to in Cuba and we have been talking about going back pretty much since we got back. Also, we received a booking bonus from Trip Central that gave us access to a premium lounge in our departure city airport, which totally started our trip off right. All in all, this was an absolutely wonderful vacation.

Amazing Beach, Great Service
The beach and service were excellent. If you picked the right foods, the food was great. The house red wine was excellent and the mixed drinks were not too sweet. The beach restaurant was excellent. As we seen on our first trip to Cuba, the hotel needs a little work. Water pressure was low and if you wanted hot water, it was best to shower in the afternoon. It was fun fishing off and swimming around the boardwalk but the boardwalk really needs repair.
We snorkeled on a local reef and there were plenty of fish and different corals to view. We also traveled to Pillar beach, and we would visit this beach again if we every return to the area.

Beautiful resort
The resort and staff were superb but once it is fully open there will not be enough room on the beach or in the lobby for everyone. The buffet restaurants had enough variety for everyone. Service was a little slow but staff are still new.
Amazing Resort
This hotel is a must if you are going to Cuba. The lagoon rooms are spectacular and if you are at the very end one like we were you are in the center of it all. Beach is like no other, crystal clear water, white sand...and long beach to walk for miles. The food is always good...meat and fish cooked as you order it. BBQ grill on the beach is excellent, but you have to be prepared to wait in line as you order your
fish and meat. The grounds are immaculate, not many flowers in February, but always kept clean and clear on a regular basis. Staff are so kind and helpful. We didn't go to the pool because the beach is so amazing, not as crowded.

New resort with great potential
The resort was new and it is going to be huge! The half resort was open during our stay and the second half is scheduled to be completed in May. I know there were a lot of reviews wondering what would happened to the public areas when the resort is fully operational. From what I've seen, they're building another lobby, as well as the second pool. I would imagine there would be a second buffet built as a part of the second Phase. But I do anticipate a problem with the beach. The beach was at near capacity when we were staying there and only half resort was open. Where the other 1000 people would go on the beach remains a mystery.
The food was good, there was lots of it, certainly not the same selection as in Mexiso or Dominican but noone was starving. They definitely need to label their dishes in Buffet, otherwise it becomes a guessing game. I was disappointed with a layout of Beach Restaurant. It is setup as a makeshift buffet and during busy times there is a huge line up of people circling the table with chafing dishes!
The service was hit or miss. Englist is definitely a challenge for some servers, especially at the main Buffet.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would go again.

Amazing resort and gorgeous beach!
The lobby was the first thing we saw and it was very nice and the people at the desk were very understanding and friendly. Nice first impression. I also loved the way the resort was laid out. The pool in the centre with small bridges breaking it up into two instead of one big pool. Everything was close once in the centre of the resort. The rooms were large and clean but a little tired. Staff was amazing and we loved dining in the International restaurant, Very elegant and the food and wine were excellent. It sat by the lagoon which was made for a great setting for the building. The weather was great and we met some really nice Canadians.
