If you are looking for the best scenery in Cuba, this your spot overlooking the Sierra mountains on one side and the Caribbean ocean on the other. If you are looking for food, go on a Cruse. The dark sand takes a while to get used to as it always looks like your feet are dirty.

There have been a great number of changes since our last visit - pre covid. All of the improvements were great as well as the staff. The only downside was the food. While they did the best they could with what they had the supply chain was basically very bad, next to non-existant. They did have on site new consultants from Italy which I hope will iron out the problems. Would recommend this resort if I was sure the food problem has been sorted

Well kept property with an amazing friendly staff. You must remember though Cuba is experiencing shortages. The odd day there might be no eggs or milk for your coffee ( pack some coffee whitener if you like) no Coke or pop at times but always juice. There is plenty of rum, tequila etc. The red wine has been very nice , only a few days no wine. The scenery is so beautiful , photos can not capture the mountains and sea like when you see it in person. Artists would love to paint or sketch from the Farrallon views. You get to use both resorts which is so nice too ! They both have bars, pools, restaurants and just a short walk between them. There are horse and buggies or a golf cart for those who would rather not walk it. It might be a little boring for teens

no coffee, no eggs, no coffee for 3 days no fresh fruit,only guayabes etc.no bananas in Cuba? no hot water in shower. 1 star Service was ok when available also terrible long two hour bus ride to hotel after a later flight

We stayed in the building on the hill. Rooms and the grounds were clean, staff was friendly and not pushy. It was some misunderstanding with entertainment in the evening. It would be nice to have more info on the bulletin board. But Public relations person was at his desk most of the time. I guess we had to ask him more questions

HOTEL STARFISH AT CAYO LARGO WAS GREAT THANKS TO SUNWING WHO TOOK OVER RESORTS. FOOD, BEACH, ROOM EXCELLENT. BEST VACATION EVER. WEATHER ALSO NICE. INTERNET WAS FREE BUT WITH PROBLEMS. HOPE TO GO THERE AGAIN.

I have visited this resort every February for the past 9 or 10 years. Many Canadians love this resort and return every year. It is a great off the beaten track kind of place with lots of nature surrounding it. And they keep it clean.It is a peaceful environment and has lots to recommend it. The beach is good and easily accessed from the Marea part of the property. However,I had several issues with the place. First of all the journey to and back is tough. It took us almost 11 to 12 hours to get there and back each time, which is about the time it takes to get to Europe from Canada.The main problem is the long bus ride from the airport to the hotel factored in after the three hour wait at the airport and the four hour flight.Some people may not mind this but as I get older, I find this increasingly difficult.I was exhausted getting there and after coming back. The other factor is the lack of variety with regard to food. On some days we had only one type of fruit available, whereas three years ago we had a choice of three or four fruits. There was no chicken so I ate pork and beef for a week. Sometimes there wasn't much bread. Soft drinks were scarce. The last day there were problems getting milk with coffee at the bar.There was no jam and few cookis or pastries at breakfast. I have food allergies and my partner is vegetarian so I felt we were always scavenging for a decent meal. I don't expect them to supply gluten-free or vegetarian options but there just wasn't a lot of variety. The entertainment was very mediocre. The house band is good but they need to up their game with new songs. Comedy routines were dated,sexist and horrible. Only the mariachi band was good and they were great but they played once a week. I know Cuba is having serious issues right now but still I feel compelled to decribe what I saw. There are excursions but the place is far from any major city and the excursions are expensive and limited. I would recommend this place but with reservations. If you love nature and don't care much about culture or food variety etc. this place is good value for your money. If not, I would think twice about going there. And bring food such as chips,peanut butter or jam with you.

We keep coming back for the overall experience. First is to again look at the amazing Maestra mountains ,the ocean and the mango trees.A walk along the beach for a mid morning Spanish coffee then back to the Farllon for lunch then relax around the pool.It is up to you to do as much as you want or as little such as going into town on a horse and buggy or a horse back ride into the mountains.

The staff here are extremely helpful and friendly. We stayed at the Farrilon this past February and our room was beautiful. The grounds are also well kept and colourful. The food is very basic but tasted great and we never went hungry! We didn't go on any excursions but loved scuba diving with Osvaldo.

We travel to Cuba frequently throughout the winter and this was our first time at this resort. The resort itself was charming but the problem was with some of the staff. We are used to staff that takes your order and delivers it to you while at the Coffee/Snack Bar at other resorts and this one you needed to stand in line to order. When on the beach you the guest are also required to drag your beach chair to the spot that you would like to use as where we normally travel to either the lifeguard or someone else will carry your lounge for you. It is these simple things the staff do to make your experience a greater vacation and a more personalized experience.

I divide my my comments between Marea Del Portilllo by the sea and companion guest section Farallon superbly placed on the Sierra Maestra slope nearby. Marea, long established, gets better for food with time.I enjoyed the seafood choices. And room updates likewise. Ease of finding swimming pool, curved beach and beverage bars and dining facilities rates high. Availability of paddle craft advertised in promo material continues an irritant. Individual staff are themselves helpful. Organization of expected services not so much. The dimension and benefits provided freely at Farallon is a bonus, another appreciated dimension.

This was our 7th time at this resort and 4 years since we've been back. The staff is still amazing and the cabanas are the same. The beach and sun make up for the shortage of food selection but you need to go with an open mind and appreciate what we have.These lovely people are kind and making the best of every day. They are unsure of their future but still smile and give hugs. If you are looking for a quiet low key vacation and something totally different from your last Mexico vacation then open your heart and mind and go. Most people are 50 plus and have enjoyed this place year after year.Many stay for 4 weeks.

Great hotel for older people. No activities for kids. The entertainment is an evening show and that is pretty much it. Food was ok, limited fruit and salad veriety. Other than that I enjoyed the hotel. Rooms were clean, hot water was always available, mountain view is amazing, nice beach. Only drawback is very bad sand leases. Really bad itching bites. I wish hotel could use smoke to get rid of them. Overall good experience.

The price is right however do not expect champagne on a beer budget. The sun and warmth is the same as all other luxury resorts. The people are kind and the food is good (I certainly did not go hungry). You can walk the beach everyday and there are a few excursions that turned out to be a lot of fun. I will return because I like the simplicity and low key. I'm done with the loud and fast pace resorts. I truly relaxed and practiced my Spanish with the locals. It's a long drive into the resort in the dark on a bad road which some would find tedious but the drive out is enjoyable because of the incredible scenery. I will return and maybe rent a car to explore this scenery on my own. Only one hang up re: this trip. I paid 25 dollars for vip lounge on the way home. It was not very well organized at the airport and other travellers thought we were butting in and became somewhat hostile. I did not pay for that! Get a line set up for vip lounge before the buses arrive so there is no chaos. Otherwise all is good!

I visited with my husband from May 27th to April 3rd. Over all the resort is kept clean, but we found a huge coach roach in our room on the first day. There are many repairs needed the resort is very rundown. The food was ok and the selection was limited. I found the staff not as friendly and helpful as other resorts we went to. Due to Sunwings flight schedule your seven day vacation is really only 5 days. I would not return to this resort.

If you're looking to just relax without being bothered, this is a great place. Hotel is dated but the staff are very friendly and work hard to maintain it and take care of the guests. Close access to the beach from the lower resort. Beautiful view of the mountains and ocean from the upper resort

We recently spent a week at this resort and had the superior room up on the hill. The staff was amazing, the food was great, the rooms and hotel was exceptionally clean. Would like to see the beach and beach bar upgraded to be as nice as at the Marea just down the hill. Overall was not impressed with the shows that were lacking in entertainment value. The pool and pool bar were both great as well. Our Sunwing rep was amazing as were the hotel staff. Would like to see more beach activities such as paddle boats and kayaks. Overall We would go again as the atmosphere was very comfortable and the views were amazing.

Very clean, had hot water everyday. Food was good for Cuba and there was some variety each day. Overall, a quiet resort with more retired people, but this was good for us. We did not go on the excusions and some of those we met did not find them up to par. There was a lot of bug bites...some were from mosquitoes but others maybe from maybe sand bugs that we could not see? I would go back for a relaxing time. Only negative was that the wifi was poor and on/off throughout stay.

Hotel was great rooms were good.service was good.small hotel good for oldies buffet could have a little more options. They could not keep there dinner reservations. But all in all good bang for the buck

This was our 3rd time to this resort. The first & 2nd time we stayed at the Marea and the 3rd time was at the Farallon. The Marea for us has a family feel and the Farallon has more of a resort feel to it. We prefer to stay at the Marea because of beach proximity, feel and location. But the Farallon has a view from the balcony which is one of the best views, in our opinion, in the world. The view brought a tear to my eyes on the last day before having to leave. Friendly people, beautiful sandy beach, good weather at a reasonable price. You cannot ask for more..

The hôtel is good and the staff are always there to help, I would definatly go back quiet and clean place could have more Entertainment. The snack bar could use 2 cook the one in the afternoon is just turning around in circle like she does not know what she is doing.The guest lare loosing patients after waiting 25 minute for a hamburger. The Manzanillo airport are charging the tourist tax now on the gifts we bring for the Cubains. They were lots of unhappy people that complain to the sunwing rep. Elena was super nice and try very hard to help us but there is nothing she can do She dit go to the airport to complain on n behalf of the tourist. We buy the gifts in Canada pay tax on it and get nail again for tax in Cuba

VERY CLEAN PLACE, FOOD WAS GOOD, PEOPLE WERE AWESOME. HAD A GREAT TIME. THE BEACH WAS BEAUITIFUL, SUNWING REP WAS A LITTLE SLOW AND NOT AVAB. MOST OF THE TIME. I FOUND IF YOU WERE STAYING AT THE OTHER RESORT YOU GOT ON THE BUSES FIRST, YOU GOT TO GO TO THE SUNSET TOUR BEFORE THE BOTTOM RESORT OTHER THAN THAT ALL IN ALL GREAT PLACE. THANKS

The resort was clean and nice but older. If your looking for a party place with white beaches this place is not for you. It was very relaxing, food was good but repetitive. Its a 2 hour ride from the airport and the roads are not good (not the resorts fault). There is a mini bar in the room but there's no water,pop or beer in it. Our shower was hot and worked great. Elana the sunwing rep was very knowledgeable and helpful. There are many repeat guests here and most are 70 in age and over. We had a relaxing week and the price was right.

Multiple visits over last 15 years...…. The Good, food has improved. Mornings always had fresh fruit, eggs to your liking, variety of breads and hot food. Lunches and dinners always included meats and fresh fish, potatoes, salads and delicious desserts. Manager of hotel made us a sandwich after unlocking the snack bar, late on a Sunday night (wow). Bar has better variety and entertainment has improved. Rooms are nice, all with a great view and any problems were addressed quickly. Noisy midnight to 2am beach disco is no longer a problem. Off site restaurants are a must. Returnee dinner is excellent (shrimp/steak/lobster). Best weather in Cuba. Not so Good. Only a few mostly broken, lounges at the Club Amigo beech and the useable ones usually reserved by towel early in the morning but pool chairs plentiful. Water and/or beer should be sold in bus for the 2 hour trip to hotel - canteen at airport is gone and airport needs major upgrade. Safes 2p/night, excursions 85p/person and towel penalty for loss 25p, are a bit much but I guess, understandable. In summary, this is our favorite resort ….. good value, quiet, scenic, wonderful staff and friendly guests. We will return again soon.

All rooms have a wonderful view. Temperature was just right. Beach was clean and there is a great waterfall with a natural pool within walking distance. Everybody was friendly and the resort fosters a family-like environment.

We have visited this resort several times and it's sad to see the deterioration that's happening to this once beautiful place. Seems no rules as staff and guests stealing goes unchecked. Lunch starts at 12 pm and ends at 2:30 pm. By 1 pm there's no meat or main course. The old Canadian men bring in local young girls and they come into the dining room with their large handbags and plastic bags and containers. No rules, no control. Staff steals logs of 10 lb cheeses, meats, and gives it to tourists to take out of the dining room We spent a month there and was disgusted by what we saw. I even took pictures of Cubans stealing food. Booze are being sold at the bar as the bartenders are greedy, no control. Our room was very clean as we put our belongings away everyday Not enough beach chairs as 2 resorts share the same beach. As long as you give tips, you get good service and many Huggs and kisses This was our 3rd year in a row and I think our last. One Canadian dollar value 72 cents against the cuc. Or one cuc cost 136 Canadian.. Guests from the other resort takes possession of beach chairs at 6 am, marking with their personal belongings and never use them till 2 pm. Such a shame and very sad to experience the changes that are happening in a once honest country.

Full of old people and prositutes. Cubans working there are miserable. Very shady place. Airport was a whole. Runway lights didnt work, had everyone sitting there locked inside for 12 hours. Before transferring everyone 4 hours away. STAY AWAY

Absolutely stunning views. Grounds are meticulously kept. Booked superior room in the upper resort. Super clean. Friendly staff. Bus ride is long and bumpy but worth it. The website for resort only shows diving for excursions but there were plenty of others ... some have to be paid by cash. Will definitely return! There are mosquitoes so take bug spray.

If you are looking for a quiet place in a secluded place and dont' mind basic accommodations and food, you might enjoy this place. The beach is nice but the sand is dark. Windy days bring big waves. Much warmer than on the North coast of Cuba. Food is really basic so are the accommodations. A lot of older folks which tend to return every year.

Although we love the resort, we stay in the newer Farallon section, and we love the friends we have made there over the years, we are becoming more and more disappointed each year we return to see the way the hotel is being let go. The owners need to give the resort some badly needed repairs, updates and attention overall. The food needs much attention, I know Cuba is not known for its cusine but they really need work on this aspect. My Mother and I will have to seriously consider whether we will return next year.

the resort is clean and basic. the grounds were kept in great shape. food was much better than when i was there 4 years ago. the staff were all very pleasant. unfortunately it is such a long drive from the airport on very bumpy roads. the cost of the trip was very reasonable for the time of year we went (12/26 to 01/02/19). Service & information by Sunwing left a lot to be desired!

The resort made promises on the list of activities that were available for us to do with the VIP package. Which was at extra cost to us, and upon arrival included nothing of added value. upon our late arrival to the resort, there was no food available after 10 hours of flight/bus ride travel time. Also having been promised to us. All mentioned activities below were part of our V.I.P extra bonus package purchases, and unfortunately none were available to our surprise. There was no snorkeling available to see any aquatic life. There was no snorkeling equipment available even to purchase. There was no scuba diving lessons in the "pool". There was no rum and cigar tasting at all. There was no person there to let us sign up for the lobster dinner who was designated to "Public Relations". The "Sunwing" travel agent who was meant to be there for customer inquires and satisfaction was absent any and all times we had an inquiry about our inclusive, "supposed to be activities", which was very convenient on their part I suppose. There was no dance lessons. There was no Spanish lessons. The tennis courts were not available for use. The medical center wasn't open for any kind of medicine, Cassandra and Nick both needed this service because they got strep throat on day 5. Two days they suffered without any relief. The bus ride was over 2 hours long from the airport, we were told on our itinerary that it was an hour. Our flight was delayed for more than 1.5 hours, which had been the only flight delayed in he hole airport that day. Do to "unforeseen" circumstances on Sunwings behalf. Upon getting to the airport in Cuba we had to wait almost an hour on the plane because there wasn't any stairs available for us to get off the plane. Which again was discomforting, as we were unaware of the issue and left with no updates or compensation, even a glass of water while we waited patiently. It's very unfortunate that this was the result of our well anticipated vacation. This upcoming end of April we are planning a trip for 10 the Vegas for 5 days, and we defiantly wont trust purchasing extra accommodations based off this experience, planning for the worst will be our top priority going forward. As for Sunwing I assure we will never fly with that Air line again. I can guarantee I will make it a mission to avoid their services, it seems they were the only airline taking passengers to Cube and if this is the case in other locations i would like to travel to, I either wont attend, or find another way even if I have to fly longer and transfer in other locations. It was a serious let down flying as one of their passengers.

As first time travelers to Cuba, we really enjoyed our stay at Marea Del Portillo. The trip started out rocky with Sunwing delays which resulted in a very late check-in and a lot of confusion regarding room availability. The trip to and from Toronto to Manzanillo is an exercise in endurance and Sunwing appears to do nothing to try to make it more comfortable for their customers. This will be our one and only trip with Sunwing. Once we were settled we quite enjoyed our time at the resort. The ocean, beach, free-flowing beer, and enjoyable service staff made our stay a relaxing pleasure. Cuba is a fascinating country and we only wish we could have seen more of it while we were there. It would have been appropriate for Sunwing and the management at the resort to acknowledge the difficulties in the trip to Manzanillo and to attempt to rectify this situation for all of us. They do not appear to be interested in making things right. Thumbs up for Club Amigo. Thumbs down for Sunwing.

Club Amigo Marea del Portillo was a lovely resort to visit, basic amenities and well kept up for its age, the staff were pleasant and the food was on-par for Cuba. we were a large group that took the opportunity to enjoy all the amenities. Coffee and french fries were a big hit, we were there for new years celebrations and the hotel staff that had to work did so with enthusiasm. the upper management would benefit from some customer care training as they seem indifferent to almost all guests. the distance from the airport is a negative and flying Sunwing anywhere is a test of ones patience. the Cuban people are amazing and I applaud them for accepting all us crazy Canucks starving for sun.

Everything was awesome once again friendly staff..great new beds and pillows. Christmas dinner was deluscious. just the beach was very weedy due to the breakdown of the tractor..Horseback riding was super!

The hotel is showing its age, but the hotel staff more than make up for this. Can't stress enough how great the staff are. For sure I will go back. The food was good , the beer was not good the first week , I think the beer was called Claro. The second week they had changed the beer back to bucanero on tap.this was a smart move , because all the Canadians I spoke with , did not like Claro beer. I stayed in the cabana section, beach front view, was great.

This is a laid back resort which requires little walking or stairs around the ground to reach the restaurants, lobby, pool and beach. I found it to be a solid 3 star as it was clean and I had no issues with my room (cabana) etc. Staff were friendly and polite and although gracious when receiving tips it was not necessary to receive good service. The beach is on a deep bay and the sand was soft and good for swimming. Buffet is limited but always found something good to eat and the pig roast night was excellent. Beware that the airport is really small and there is no opportunity for food there and the duty free is small. If you are looking to bring back some rum, cigars or knicknacks the resort has a better selection than the airport. The resort seems to appeal to seniors and there were a large percentage of people coming for 2+ weeks. While not for a younger, active crowd something is right since I would guess well over half of the guests were repeat (some 10+ visits).

ve had very good time enjoing vacation at marea del portilo resort . it was very good and i vera hope to go again in the same resort. everything was close buy location beach with privacy not close people to you water was calm going in weather was good ,raining every day but in the night food was o kay for the 3 star hotel it was far from the airport 2 hours by buss , but it was worth it we like it and going again to the same place

The hotel was clean and the grounds were looked after. We found the pool is small and the beach sand not white and water not turquoise as shown on website. The columns railings and other areas could use some repairs and fresh paint. The room was clean and staff was attentive when asked for repairs. The food was reasonable, some too much of same.. We found the bus trip from the Airport too long with bad roads. Our first time in the summer at the resort and we found too many children at this time as of summer holidays and the small pool was overcrowded. Overall we had a good time for the price we paid. Recommend for staff when booking a la carte dinner to suggest to guests to bring sweater as the dining room was tastefully set up is not too big and the air conditioning unit could not be adjusted is was very cold.

Marea del portilo is small, quite and relaxing resort with beautiful grounds, warm ocean, great customer service. If you need to run away from busy and stressful routine this is the place. We stayed in cabana 10 with VIP package upgrades and it well worth it. You will receive a couple bottles of rum and wine, beers and pops upon arrival, Cayo Blanca excursion with lobster lunch, 30 minutes massage, express check in and late check out and couple more things can't remember. Food is yes repetitive but OMG it's good, their cuban beef soup is die for. Room was clean with no smell, cleaned daily and bath towels changed daily as well. But what was amazed us is the customer service, cleanliness and totally relaxing atmosphere, people at the resort are so friendly and polite, always smiling when greeting you. We are planning to come back soon

MAREA IS GOOD HOTEL FOR LOW PRICE. DO NOT EXPECT ANY LUXURIES. FOOD IS ACCEPTABLE. BEACH IS NICE. HORSE BACK RIDING IS GOOD, WE WENT FIVE TIMES. EXCURSIONS TO CAYO BLANCO ARE NICE. STAFF IS DOING THEIR BEST. MAY IS RAINY SEASON. WERY IMPORTANT, THERE ARE NO MOSQUITOS LIKE IN OTHER RESORTS.

I try to get the same room and have gotten it for the four times I was there. There is a door from my room that leads directly onto the beach area and I like that. That room is close to everything - the dining room, the swimming pool (which I have never been into) and the snack bar and also two bars.

The rooms are satisfactory although the plumbing is poor with toilets barely functioning and solar water heaters that don’t deliver. The main pool is clean and the staff are friendly and helpful. The beach is dark sand and the seaweed was excessive this time, a seasonal issue I believe. Cuban food is wholesome but can be bland. Breakfast was usually good, as long as a tip appeared bacon was available. The clientele is generally older, including a lot of male travellers with ‘fiancés’ in the local town. The fiancés were young, Cuban and apparently enjoyed the financial and social benefits of their Canadian suitors. Quite an interesting experience. Visiting the local towns is recommended as well as the sunset cruise.

first time at the resort and fell in love with this place. beutifal location .great service food was actually not bad small resort with a big heart.clean rooms great bar service never waited long.sun wing rep very helpful.read many reviews about how bad the bus trip its not great but the reward is at the end of the bus trip. met many wonderful people very laid back. now the if part of why I may not return.on the way back to the airport same bus trip which was suspected you know what youre getting no problem it only got bad when we got to the airport.very hot humid day check in at airport was horrific no air conditioning at airport not working no problem its cuba women laughing no toilet seats or paper in ladies room its cuba this is expected the problem was 1 person to check in 200 people you could here physically ill in washroom due to heat this is not a cuba problem this is a sunwing problem for not having proper staff on the ground.i would love to return to this resort but only if the airport issues are addressed so if you go write about your airport experience

This charming hotel provides all the comforts required while on vacation. The rooms are clean and well maintained, albeit could use updating. Only complaint about the room is the pillows, they are terrible.The staff are very friendly and acommodating. The waitstaff at the restaurants and various bars go beyond in terms of customer service. The location is visually stunning. Situated on the ocean with the Sierra Maestra mountains on the horizon, it is the most beautiful of all the locations I have stayed in while in Cuba. The food is adequate but could use a bit more variety. Having the ability to dine at the sister resort hotel Farallon is a bonus as it offers a change from the daily buffet. Every one who we met at the resort was a repeat visitor which attests to the quality and charm this hotel has to offer. There is good variety for activities should one chose to participate. Although the location is stunning, the journey to get there is a bit long, 2 hrs by shuttle bus over very bumpy roads, but worth it once you get there. We loved our stay at Marea Del Portillo and hope to return in the near future.

This is the 4th time in 2 1/2 years we have traveled to the Marea del Portillo resort in Manzanillo, Cuba. We had previously traveled to Holguin and it pales in comparison. At the Marea, you feel safe, you feel welcome and it truly feels like a home in the tropics. The staff are kind, welcoming and incredibly hard working. The food is good, well prepared and like most places in Cuba, by the end of your trip can be a bit repetitive but that's not unique to just this resort. There are a few absolutely fantastic off resort restaurants (Ferlins and Danys are the two most popular) if you want a change in food options. They are very economical and absolutely delicious. The views and beach are bar none. You have a majestic view of the Sierra Maestra mountains and it's to die for. You have two pools to chose from during the on season (at the Marea and at the Farallon). Keep in mind- in off season the Farallon closes down. The access to the Caribbean Sea is only feet away when you stay at the Marea. If you're looking for a party resort, this is NOT for you. If you're looking for a more mature crowd and a place to unwind, relax and explore- I cannot recommend this location any higher. Take the plunge, you won't regret it.

I have stayed at the farrallon three times. This is the only resort I will ever come back to again and again. It is small but very special. It is not perfect, but perfect enough to me :) The veiw is spectacular, beautiful gardens, well looked after, everyone is so friendly. The price to go here is unbelievable. My family and I are counting down the days to go back again

Hidden gem of Cuba. If you are looking to experience cuba in its nature this is the place. This resort might not be to everyone liking.if you are a high end resort person this is not your place. It is clean,great local food and friendly people.

I was looking for peace and quiet this trip. I have gone to Holguin 15x in 7 yrs, and wanted to see somethign different. I was not looking for the party atmosphere. The very first night, I knew I was home. I met some wonderful tourists who took me under their wing, gave me pointers, recommendations, and advice of the area, and ppl. I went alone, so my room was big enuff for me. I didn';t have hot water when I needed it, but thats ok. The food was ok. The resort workers were friendly. Am sure when I go more often, they will be even friendlier. I stayed in the lower resort. Swam once in the pool, but never in the ocean. When I wanted too there was too much seaweed washing up. It was an excrutiating trip from airport and to airport as it takes along time to get there. The airport-i must warn you-bring water to drink.

Simple and relaxing. This hotel is the perfect place to get away from the stress. The staff are wonderful and there is lots to keep you busy if you want to. If you don’t care if it’s fancy and you want a real cultural experience I highly recommend this place.

Overall I was pleased with the resort. I went to have a relaxing vacation and that’s what I got. The bus ride to the hotel was very very long, but I enjoyed the remote feel of the resort. Considering that the food is a struggle everywhere in Cuba I found the food manageable. I didn’t go hungry and was able to find something To eat everyday. The beach was very nice, scenery was beautiful. The rooms were very dated but I wasn’t there for to stay inside. I was there for some sun, and the beach. I found the resort clean and they had a good selection of drinks. The day trips and evening activities were unorganized. They overbooked some activities and cancelled others without notice. Overall I was pleased and felt that I got good value for my money.

Excellent micro climate, sunny every day, nice warm waves ,up to almost body temperature near the shore, stayed in the water forever. Spectacular mountain view, with peaks partly covered by dramatic clouds. Cabana in good shape, AC and TV working for the first time perfectly.. Friendly staff. Good food, but sometimes almost no food left after 8pm. Problems: Annoying luggage mess on the return trip to the airport.. We were in the first bus and our luggage ended almost 2h later on the 4th, Montreal bus. Can these people not simply mark ( a simple sign) TORONTO, MONTREAL, MANZANILLO. And place (drop) the luggage at the right place.. One bus had to return to Marea, for what? Such a simple situation: only Marea and Manzanillo....! Toronto and Montreal...! Very frustrating, searching on 4 buses, when our luggage was perfectly placed to be loaded on the first, our, bus - departing as scheduled, one hour ahead of the scheduled Montreal departures. Several people mentioned problems with the money exchange, had to correct to get the accurate exchange. One person was offered 53 pesos for 100 dollars. Especially with so many senior citizens, this practice is unacceptable. On the trip to Marea, the road was in the worst shape ever. I think they took a changed route for the return trip or partly fixed the potholes.

Everywhere I looked, I was amazed with the sites. The beach, hotel, grounds, even wildlife, were just amazing. The staff was so courteous and the locals were terrific. Went for a buggy ride to the falls, and was given a pile of bananas just because. Seemed like a long drive from the airport, but once we arrived, it was well worth it.

What can we say about this resort... good food and great people in a scenic location... we didn't expect much and were pleasantly surprised. Thank-you to Mayelin (Manager) in particular. She and her staff went out of the way to accommodate us and make our stay most enjoyable. Food: its classic Cuban but better than most (been to Cuba every year). Tasty fresh baked bread every day-wow! Fresh eggs- best I've had ever (and I lived on a farm). Being where they are, food seems sourced fresh locally. Best Shrimp dinner I've had in years at Cuban Restaurant. Tasty cucumbers- no seeds, no burping-lol. Potatoes are to die for- sorry to my PEI peeps. 'Home made' soups were fantastic. Selection is minimal but something for everyone; the Chefs can be proud of their cuisine. Note: Pizza and fries at snack bar were great, but you sometimes had to wait a while- Cuban hang time! Scenery: hey, we're talking resort nestled at the foot of the Sierra Maestra mountains on one side and the Marea del Portillo bay / Carribean ocean on the other. There are small waterfalls nearby - 6-8 CUC cab ride there and back; worth it. Friendly animals here, there and everywhere -lol. (sow, horses, goats, cows, iguana's, geckos, etc.) roam the streets occasionally. If you have the time and money, there are many excellent excursions you can take. We went simply to relax, get some sun and enjoy meeting people. At the time we went, the guests were mostly folk 50+ but there were a few families and younger couples having a good time. There are two resorts: one above (where we were in the 'superior' rooms) and one below (with option of hotel room or Cabins). We had a look at both and not much difference. Lower resort is older and better for people with mobility limitations. We went to beach - not the greatest but great to walk along... we prefer poolside. Clean room, had plenty of hot water and pressure (Hint: may have to leave tap on for a minute to get maximum heat). Daily activities and nightly entertainment available for those who wish to partake. Not fancy schmancy but they try hard and take pride in what they do. The musicians are really good! Please-please tip them; they earn every dollar. They all do - don't be cheap; they appreciate it. PS: if you have the room in your luggage (up to 50 lbs) bring extra clothes and give them away... really needed and appreciated by all. Note: to anyone heading down there, if you have extra used pool cue, ping pong paddles or balls, they could use some extra as their supplies are limited. Hope this review helps. This quiet and rural location is beautiful beyond description. The people are so nice and there are many opportunities to explore outside of the resort activities. If you are looking to have an experience with Cuba this is the place to go.

This was our 3rd trip to the Marea del Portillo, but our first time in a standard room (rm 114) as we usually book the Cabana VIP option. For those not in the know- Standard room/Cabana are at the lower and older part of the resort in the Marea section. Anything that says Superior is located at the Farallon in the upper and newer part of the resort. The standard room we were in was almost right in front of the little store on site, in between the main lobby and the pool area. There’s no denying it’s smaller than the Cabana, especially the shower (pretty tiny) however we had no complaints. We had a king bed, working A/C and a place to wash up. What more do you need? The standard rooms have more 110 v outlets than the Cabanas I find. You have a back door that literally opens to the Caribbean Sea. Anyone who complains needs a reality check. This trip we stayed January 17-24, 2018. The first couple of days it was a bit cool (by Cuban standards) however I’ll take the 20c vs the -14c we left in Ontario. To comment to the negative reports from December (and prior) re: cold water showers in the standard rooms, this is in direct relation to the climate change and the cooler weather. The water is heated by solar panels, if you have no sun, it’s not warm. This is NOT the fault of the resort. If you want someone to blame, blame ourselves for ruining our environment. You are in a different country with different (and much more environmentally friendly) methods of heating. There isn’t one giant hot water heater to service the hotel, that is simply not feasible when you have nature to do that for you. ProTip: Shower in the afternoon. Our routine consisted of getting up between 7-8am, got some breakfast and went to enjoy either the pool or beach for the heat of the day (on the days we weren’t booked for an excursion). Had my afternoon nap because why not?! Then had my daily shower between 3-5pm for optimal warm/hot water. This may fluctuate after Daylight Savings Time kicks in on March 11th. Also bring your own pillow, you’ll thank me. The new construction of the snack bar was a bustling busy area and they certainly made a lot of progress. People who were critiquing the speed of the construction- I challenge you to hammer in multiple layers of palm leaves on the roof in 30+c weather, with the sun beating down on you… oh and using make shift hammers. One gentleman was using a wooden block as a hammer. Give your head a shake! These workers were working damn hard, show them that respect or you pick up a hammer and lend a hand. The temporary Marea snack bar now has overnight fries (11pm-7am) and little pizzas, ham cheese sandwiches, hotdogs and burgers, fries (12-5pm). The snack bar moves to the Marea beach bar at 11pm. This is amazing! Although I can’t wait to see the finished snack bar, it looks awesome. Much like any resort in Cuba (1-5 stars) the food, yes, can be repetitive however with a little innovation and creativity you can spruce some items up. Example: bacon and cheese sandwiches for breakfast. I laid two pieces of bread with butter and slices of cheese flat through the little toaster and tossed some bacon from the grill in the sandwich and voila. Or for the spaghetti/tomato sauce- break up a hamburger up into the sauce OR spaghetti/butter and bring down some garlic powder- garlic butter pasta. Think outside the box. Yes, there are dogs on the resort. Yes they are super cute and friendly. No I would not say they were “flea infested”. Yes, I did feed them because unlike some others- I have compassion for ALL animals. Don’t be so selfish and hateful! There are salamanders, little lizards, horses, goats, pigs, beautiful birds, cats/kittens, frogs all over the resort- are you going to complain about them too? This is CUBA. Not Canada. Sheesh, there are no pleasing some people. I find the rude people more of a nuisance than the hungry animals. We encountered a group of young ladies from Quebec (although location doesn’t matter, there were rude Ontarians as well) who were just horrid. Rude to the bartenders, left a huge mess around their area on the beach (to which WE cleaned up since the hard working Cubans have enough to do than clean up after these disrespectful jerks) and when you think of Millennial stereotype- these ladies fit the bill. Fortunately, they are the minority. Most guests are kind and generous. Off resort this trip we did the 3 Towns Tour excursion and we had a blast. I forget the name of the young lady who was the tour guide but she was just fantastic! I hadn’t seen her before but anticipate future excursions with her knowledge. It only cost us 20cuc each. Well worth the money. We stopped at one ranchers house and they offered food and drink from their land, allowed you to explore their property and inside the house. Very humble and kind people. The homemade cheese was to die for! We have done the El Macho tour previously, also an eye opener and well worth the cuc price. We did the horse adventure last year and it was a blast however if you’re not used to riding a horse, expect some sore thighs and naughty bits for a couple of days after. HAHA We went to dinner to both Ferlins and Danys. The food at both was fantastic and you’re getting a huge beautiful meal for 15cuc or so and this includes shrimp and lobster! We love both restaurants equally and recommend them both. I haven’t tried the Miramar (closer to Pilon) but it’s on our bucket list. Taxi prices fluctuate but can be 5cuc per trip to either Ferlins or Danys. Dirt cheap. We also took the horse and buggy (had Henrys’ buggy, he’s super sweet) to the little waterfall for 8cuc there and back. They wait for you while you explore the waterfall too! Such kind people. This trip we did not go to Cayo Blanco as we didn’t select the VIP option, however we have been twice before and will be returning in April. It never disappoints. Highly recommended. If you’re looking for a unique gift to take home, please see Adriel on the resort. He’s often found over by the Repeaters Wall. He will paint you a personal 8x10 canvas, or paint on a rock or if you’re a repeater guest, he will paint a scene on the wall. Prices fluctuate but he’s such a lovely and talented young man- why not support his craft? Another request: PLEASE DO NOT TIP in Canadian nor US dollars. No one will turn away a tip, lord knows I wouldn’t however please be aware that the employees are NOT ALLOWED to change your CAD/USD to CUC/CUP pesos. So your CAD/USD is pretty much useless. Our chambermaid was so shy but asked if we would exchange a $20 CAD to Cuban pesos for her. Which we did because it’s not her fault people don’t know this limitation they have. You can exchange your CAD at the little bank located at the airport the night of arrival or you can exchange at the hotel lobby desk. We didn’t want to wait in the line at the bank on the night of arrival, so we just exchanged at the lobby desk. We had about 40cuc leftover from our last trip, so fortunately we had a CUC tip for the gentleman who carried our luggage to our room. He was very grateful and so happy! The Sierra Maestra airport is the size of a Tim Hortons so be patient, they are doing their best with what they have. When you have a plane with 200+ people arriving, while another 200+ people are up in the departure waiting room (which is just a glorified sauna as only one A/C unit was working upon departure) it can be overwhelming but it’s pretty impressive that they can have two planes within a couple hours time turned around with 400+ arrival (Toronto and Montreal planes) and 400+ departure (again Toronto and Montreal) in such a small space. Grab a Cristal beer at the little patio and just breathe through the process. The people who “hurry up and wait” are still going to the same place you are whether you’re at the beginning or end of the long line. There is a reason why Marea del Portillo has so many repeat guests. Is it a 5 star, no. But if you want to walk on the beach, feel absolutely safe, not worry about theft or being hassled, you will also encounter so many amazing people who work damn hard for you to sit back and get hammered on the all inclusive – then this is the place for you. There is no denying that prostitution occurs however it’s also visible at other resorts and oh no; God forbid in your own damn country. My point of view- if they are two consenting ADULTS then it’s not my damn business. Kudos to the sex workers for taking advantage of those willing to pay for their services. This resort does not advertise as a “kid destination”, although children are welcome however don’t complain when it’s been clear in MANY reviews that this type of activity occurs and you bring precious Billy to the resort. My first trip to Cuba was to Holguin and I hated it there (Club Amigo Guardalavaca) and I’ve been to the Marea 3 times (4th this upcoming April). It’s got its own magic and charm. Take the plunge, you’ll fall in love too.

Pro: Condition of room, resort and grounds was great. Staff and guests were nice. Been here five times and the resort has improved - view is great, however ..... Cons: Their policy of midnight to 2:00am disco should be reviewed. Loud in many of the rooms, unlit, poorly attended and not in tradition of quiet restful resort.

My Mother and I are repeat visitors to the Farallon, my self over 10 visits and my Mother over 20. We enjoy the area where this hotel is located and the employees are wonderful. My issue is that each year seems to take more and more VIP items away. We pay for the VIP package and are probably not going to do it next year, if we go again. The resorts large boat was out of commission so there was no sunset cruise, they were taking people on a bus to see the sunset, thank goodness we have seen it many times and passed on that excision (that we paid for) this boat is also used to take people to Cayo Blanco for the day, for this excursion they had a small boat that sat 12 to 13 people maximum. My mother and I were fortunate we were on the first load to go to the island but it took quite some time to get everyone over and I understand the on last load the captain said it was the last one and he jammed 22 people on that small boat. There were not even enough life vests on this boat for 12 to 13 people let alone an overloaded one of 22. Again, this was an excursion that we pre-paid for in our VIP package that, if we go to this resort again next year, we will not be taking.

I have been here 8 times,they are doing some work around the hotel.it suits me,good staff,clean rooms.Lots of room around the pool,with plenty of loungers to sit and soak it all in.the beach also has plenty of room for everyone.all in all will be back again this year.

My husband and I, in our seventies, visited this resort for a week. It was our ninth trip to Cuba. Out of those nine trips, I felt that this resort was the best for nature, scenery and outdoor activities. The staff at the hotel were great, but the food had a limited variety. For example, the fruit was limited and the menu was repetitious. I really liked the resort and what it offered but Sunwing was a nightmare. We were six hours on the tarmack before we left Toronto to arrive at the resort at 4:00 in the morning. My husband is partially disabled and needs a wheelchair. The Sunwing air staff stood at the top of the stairs of the plane, chit-chatting, while he struggled to get reach the bottom (they knew he was onboard and should have been watching out for him). The Manzanillo airport is very unorganized and people with disabilities should be made aware of the difficulties there. If my two daughters had not been with us, we would probably still be standing in the airport (there is little seating specifically in arrivals as you are waiting for your bags which is a very unorganized process). My husband had told Sunwing about his disability and there was not enough done especially since the trip was extremely long and the airport was so haphazard. In summary, if you have a disability don't fly Sunwing. We were given vouchers but

I have never been to an all-inclusive resort, nor to Cuba, but I thought it was decent value for the money. The staff are very friendly and the entertainment, especially the Cuban band with the flute and sax player IS AMAZING. Everything is pretty clean, the excursions are good (the trip to the island, the horse adventure and the 3 towns tour) There are beautiful mountains surrounding the hotel, lots of gorgeous small farms and local life and great opportunities to hike in nature. The food is ok- it is mostly the same every day (not great for sure, but I am not a fussy eater) The beer they have is very heavy, and they don't have the finest alcohol, but there is a lot of mixes so you can find something to drink. The beach is good but get a beach chair early as they will be gone. We had a lot of problems with Sunwing (the flight going out was delayed 7 hours, we got vouchers which were a bit hard to use, and I feel that the Sunwing rep at the hotel is a bit overworked as she works for 2 sites). You can use both these hotels which is a nice thing- more restaurants, etc. If you like nature and want pretty good value- I think it is worth it. Make sure you watch that band (you may have to go to the other hotel but if I go back I only want to watch them....)

I was very happy with the resort and grezt people and workers. The rooms were cleaned very hood every day. Enjoy going to the resort when both hotels are open. Food was okay but as a repeat guest I overlook the menu

Hotel is basic, three stars. Beach is excellent, ocean warm. If you have no great expectations it is ok. We like it. Mountains are green. Staff is good. Country is poor, so do not expect any luxuries.

Travelled with a group of 8, we all had a good time. People were kind and rooms and resort was clean. Weather was great as well Enjoyed listening to the bands and shows! Would like to return again Cuba we will see you soon

I thought the grounds were beautiful there was live crabs crawling around and big ones too. There was animals like horses,pigs, and even bats around the grounds, wow crazy stuff. The hotel cabana was great and the staff there was good, very safe place there was security staff on the grounds 24-7.. ,

Resort was great, rooms were clean, staff is friendly. My daughters friend who was homesick, gave free horseback riding whenever they .wanted. Beaches were clean as well. Overall I am with the Marea as I am a repeat visitor. My daughter has family near the resort it is very handy visit them all.

There were 8 of us in total including two younger kids (11 and 9). The resort is certainly showing it's age but it easily makes up for it with the staff. The staff and the excursions really made this a fun vacation. We all felt very safe both off and on the resort. I suggest renting the scooters and exploring the neighboring towns on your own. We got to meet some amazing people that way. Food was really good and the soups were outstanding. All in all a great vacation

The hotel was very well maintained. The grounds were kept in immaculate condition. The walk ways were washed and cleaned on a daily basis. Everything was so wonderful. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was fantastic. The variety was good, lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. There was something different at every meal. The homemade soups were mouthwatering. The homemade breads were just fantastic. So fresh and such a variety of breads. I am looking forward to making a return trip.

We had the place almost to ourselves. Food Good but not Great. Sand flies very hungry. No tennis balls at the resort. Local lobster Very Good. Excursions well run and organized. Bread and buns excellent but no butter the last 2 days. We all had a really nice time 20-60 year olds.

This was a beautiful resort, the Farallon Hotel rooms all have excellent views of the ocean or lagoon and mountains. The buffet was very nice, good selection and always something to eat. The wine this time around was pretty horrible but bottles are available for purchase and that saved the day. There were fewer iguanas than in the past but still around and hungry for lettuce! Cayo Blanco was fantastic, excellent beach and wonderful lobster lunch. You can't beat the Jeep Excursion to the waterfall - best jeep ride ever! Up into the heart of the mountains and 25deg slopes. Wild!

Really enjoyed meeting the people at the resort.Many repeat guests who were very friendly and outgoing. Rooms were adequate and very clean as well as all common areas.Food a bit repetitive but we were never hungry. Went on excursion with another guest couple to the mountain village and was welcomed with open arms by the locals! It was the highlight of our trip. The sunset cruise was fantastic and very memorable, got some great photos.

this is a beautiful place with amazing staff. The food was great and so was the service. You are right by the beach and I highly recommend v.I.p. can't wait to go again next year. I miss this place already.

Hotel was kept very clean inside and out. we were in the superior room which meant we were at the hotel that had a nice pool but we weren't close to the beach. It's ok if you can walk downhilll and back up again unfortunately I couldn't. They had a golf cart that was supposed to be running all the time but we found it very seldom ran. Either it was being charged or broken down depending on who you talked to . No stores around the area per say. we did take a horse & buggy into a small town for a lobster dinner which was excellent. Did not find the staff very friendly. If I was ever to go back I would book basic so that I would be close to the beach without having to worry about getting there.

,if you like hiking, swimming and great hot weather then you would like Marea. Food only so so They have a grill going for most meals and that's with fresh fish and hamburgers Place very clean. Staff helpful and speak English fairly well. Sunwing organizes many outings and the hotel organizes activities around the pool and in the evenings.

I stayed at the Faralon section of the hotel. Food was incredibly fresh, good variety and meat was very flavourful. Fresh fish every day. The view from anywhere on this resort is just breathtaking. I loved the way the local farm animals wandered on to the resort in the evening, hers of goats, a few cows, sheep the local iguanas. The staff were always smiling, relaxed and ready and willing to help. Entertainment was varied and good local Cuban music. I loved this resort and would highly recommend it. Everything was also spotlessly clean.

We were in Cuba for one week at the Marea Del Portillo. The staff was very friendly have to say thanks to ( Milady at al carte ,her husband Frank, then bar personals , Ramo, Sudama Tequila, the breakfast , lunch and dinner staff the pool guy (Eddy) they were very tentative to our needs and made us feel like part of them which was great! Must say the resort is very clean, the grounds were well kept the beach is very close we could hear the waves from our cabanas , the pool was inviting ! which I enjoyed to the fullest We were able to get coconut every day (great) Our cabanas was very clean and our maid made sure we were very comfortable thanks (Yorinder & Maria). This resort is for more retirees or for people looking to have a relaxing quite time. Overall it's a beautiful resort and you could enjoy both resort the (Farlaon)! Thanks to the staff at the resort we had a great vacation My only concern is the resort is to far drive from the airport and there's not much to see outside the resort........... Regards Jenn

WHILE THE RESORT AND STAFF WERE AS WE HAVE FOUND THEM ON PREVIOUS TRIPS...WONDERFUL. WE WERE DISAPPOINTED NOT TO BE ABLE TO BOOK THE ALACART. IT HAS BEEN CHANGED FROM BOOKING RIGHT AT THE RESTAURANT TO HAVING TO BOOK THROUGH THE PUBLIC RELATIONS PERSONNEL. WE WERE TOLD THAT IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO E-MAIL A WEEK BEFORE OUR NEXT VISIT IN APRIL TO RESERVE. FOUND THE FOOD SOMEWHAT LACKING THIS VISIT. EVERY TIME CHICKEN WAS ON THE BUFFET, IT WAS ALWAYS LEGS ONLY, DID FIND OUT HOWEVER, IF YOU WAITED UNTIL ABOUT 1/2 HOUR BEFORE CLOSING, WHEN THE TRAYS WOULD BE EMPTY, THEY WOULD BE REFILLED WITH CHICKEN BREASTS, IN ORDER FOR THE STAFF TO HAVE CHICKEN BREASTS AVAILABLE FOR THEIR MEALS. VERY DISAPPOINTING. MYSELF AND MY HUSBAND WERE BOTH SICK FOR A DAY, AND HEARD THAT QUITE A FEW OF THE GUEST HAD THE SAME COMPLAINT.

I have been to the Maria 5 times,and my son 3. Now that they have WIFI they need to twek it a little to work better, they need updated pictures for your site ,. The service is good and the food was better than in the past,clean rooms and a good hotel, even though it,s 62 years old. I enjoy my stay each time I go,just wish it was a little cheaper . And no single supplement if I go by myself. 10 day packages would be awesome,but all in it was a good trip,and service.look forward to my next stay,and see my Cuban friends again..

Just amazing atmosphere. mostly repeat visitors which come every year and a very quiet place, exept the loud music after midnight from the beach party. With ear plugs or moving to the lagoon side ok.

Travel to, long day, 9am flight, stop over in Santiago de Cuba, on to Manzanillo, then 2 hour bus [w/ a/c and w/c], arrived after 6 to staff greeting with drinks and fast check in, dinner in only dining room off lobby, buffet style, and has adjoining outdoor seating. [ bkfst 7 to 10, lunch 12 to 2, dinner 6 to 930] Food somewhat repetitive, but always plenty of choices. Grill in outdoor dining, great omelettes, bacon, fish. Snack bar by pool for hamburgers, hot dogs, good French fries.[bring ketchup [theirs is watery[ and relish [none], mustard is ok]. Bar at pool 6am to 11pm, best coffee on resort [but wont make after 10pm]. Pool cleaned every day, lifeguard, 9 to 6. Rooms, clean, lots of towels, ask your maid for beach towel [mine was replaced 3 x in my 2 weeks] All rooms face the beach, don't miss the sunrises over the ocean.Beach long, dark fine sand, some smooth pebbles but ok to walk on most of them, water, great surf, very warm, can walk out a long way, on beach some palapas, lots of loungers, beach bar 10 to 5. would go again

This is the first resort that I have been to that there was someone that passed away. The room location that I stayed at was great - you open the back door and you can walk right to the beach and ocean. There were showers right at our back door to wash the beach off of your feet and suit. The staff was most friendly and helpful. You cannot complain about the food, spaghetti, meat, fish and chicken - lunch and dinner. I enjoyed the soup. Fish on the grill - eggs to your liking each am. The only drawback is the cubans were allowed and they piled food in plastic containers and I mean piled it on. At the snack bar they would order 12 hamburgers and all of us had to wait (the grill is small for a dozen) and this was for them to take away from the snack bar. But the staff were wonderful. There are enough lounges on the beach and at the pool area for all. The view from the hotel on the mountain is wonderful a must go and see. I have been to Cuba 37 times and I think there are enough hotels there - I like to change areas and hotels, but I do recommend this one (mostly for seniors) The 2 hour bus ride to the hotel from the airport is expected. I had a wonderful time - weather and ocean were great. I will only fly Sunwing - the staff are great.

The resort itself was fine. The food was a bit repetitive but other than that it was good. The diving however was a different story. Everyday we went to the dive shop to see if they were diving. They wouldn't take us out diving all week and a couple of days the dive master never even showed up. Finally we were told that there was no gas. We complained to guest relations and they arranged for us to do a one tank dive, catching a ride with an excursion to cayo blanco. They told us it was on the hotel but the dive guy said we had to pay. We talked to our sunwing rep helena and she straightened it out. She was awesome. The dive was very poor visibility and the dive master got too far ahaead of us and lost us. We looked around but couldnt find him. We were going to go up but noticed the boat overhead so we decided to use up our air..when we got to the boat the dive master was already onboard and had all of his equipment off. He said he got cold and went up. Wow! We picked this resort specifically for diving and never got to dive. Unacceptable. Won't be going back to this resort. If you dont dive it might be an okay resort for you.

Very clean room resort beach, staff is friendly always there to help you, I will not go back at the time of the carnival the reason for it lots of Spanish speaking guest and I felt we were left out , language barriere

The trip: This time the check in by Sunwing was excellent. Very quick, helpful, and efficient. The cabin crew was OK. This was 2 stops flight. In Manzanillo now the 1st people to leave the plane were people going to Varadero. They had to go briefly via customs and next to the waiting room. Their carry on was checked there as well. Manzanillo airport does not have good setup for this. Going through customs in Manzanillo was a bit longer too, hence there is more Cubans travelling now and it takes longer for them. The check in bags were ready when all the checks were done. Getting into the bus was quick and efficient. The bus trip took 1.5 hrs. The check in into hotel was quick as well. Accommodation: I stayed in the room 222. Good A/C, good bathroom, the rest was quite all right. The maid service was excellent. Good TV reception. Basic room. 221 was so, so. 223 and 224 were good. Food: The food was good. Again, I will suggest going early to get good selection; 7:00 am breakfast, 12:00 pm for lunch, 6:00 pm for dinner. A la carte restaurant is very nice. There is a grill by the pool side with hamburgers, sandwiches, and fries. They had great beef patties. Good wine, beer at restaurants and more choices at the bars. The beach bar has limited selection of drinks now; rum, pop, wine, and no beer. At 11 pm they are getting beer at the beach bar and they move music over there too. Entertainment: The entertainment was good. The bigger catamaran was broken, the small one was taking 2 people. Misc.: It was very hot week. The beach bar has a nice breeze. It was much busier hotel then it used to be at that time. The water in the bay was very warm. The next sign of changing times in Cuba was a lots of Cuban tourists during that time. I think that out of my 7 days there, during 4 days the hotel was sold out. So if you are planning to invite Cuban friends make sure and do reservation for them ASAP after you arrive. The good sigh was the fact that the hotel adjusted with staff and services. The food was resupplied constantly during meals. They are also not refilling big bubbas at the bar, what makes me happy and limiting the quantity to 2 burgers or sandwiches per person at the grill. No problem to get it again if you are still hungry. Also, this time there were more kids and they had fun. Those passing through Marea, the alternative to staying at the hotel is very nice Casa Particular in Marea. I can provide details and pictures. The store is still there. Still check if you are not overcharged. Also, if you buy for Cubans a gift from the store, give them receipt too with the gift. It will save them a trouble. The road is not fixed yet. It was good trip and I again had good time. This time I stayed mostly at the resort. The staff is really great. Hotel, food, staffs was average. We notice that their were too many Cubans at the resort - more so than Canadian/ European guests. Cubans stashed food in large bags, large coolers to take home with them.

Maria Portillo I was there 2016, July 13-20. Weather: Despite a very rainy forecast, the weather was sunny, warm to hot with very few rains. Flight: Sunwing was good and brought us everywhere on time. Cuban bus brought us to the hotel in three hours including sitting and waiting in the bus for somebody important, like driver’s brother-in-law or whoever. The way back was very smooth. Room was OK… but TV was horrible. AC was very cheap and noisy. Food was nothing fancy, but real, fresh tasty and in variety. Usual Cuban tricks are mixes of yesterday’s food, pretending they are salads. Yes, those were there too. They have only one bar, which works non-stop. It is way better than several bars are open in shifts. Entertainment was there, but just barely. The shop was working 8 to 8. No problems with money exchange. There was a very few to non sandflies and mosquitos. The only pool is surprisingly small. There were some people from Canada and abroad. The rest were Cubans. On weekend the hotel was packed with them. They are big families of all generations with crying babies. They eat and drink and yelling nonstop. A dense crowd fills the small pool for hours drinking and ….not going out. Week days were a way calmer. The beach has thin grey sand and the water is murky. Waves are very mild. You do not need a water shoes. You can see very few people on the beach. Most are busy in the bar. _____________________________________________________ Resume: If you can afford something better, do it. _____________________________________________________ There is a good coral reef in 30 minutes of walk and 5 minutes of swimming. You have to be certain swimmer to reach it because of surf. I was attacked twice by wild bees while going there through the bush.

HOTEL ROOMS AND BEACHES ARE CLEAN, FOOD IS CUBAN, ROASTED PIG ONCE A WEEK. NO MOSQIUTOS AND BEACH BUGS, AND NO SEE WEED. VIP PACKAGE IS WORTH MONEY, WITH THREE EXCURSIONS AND OTHER GOODIES. MOUNTAINS ARE MAGNIFICENT ALL AROUND AND LOCAL PEOPLE ARE FRIENDLY, BRING SOME PRESENTS FOR THEM PLEASE.

Can certainly understand why there are so many repeat visitors. This resort is quaint and located in a very scenic region. Housekeeping does an awesome job, staff are friendly and helpful. Beach lovely and perfect for gentle body surfing.

GREAT STUFF, VERY FRIENDLY, GREAT FOOD, BEACH ITS GREAT, WE DID NOT HAVE TO LOOK FOR BEACH CHAIRS, THEY WERE ALWAYS THERE EVERY MORNING WE TOOK THE SAME PLACE AND THAT WAS A PLUS, IT IS CLEAN AND ROOMS ARE SPACIOUS.

Older resort, very clean, staff was very friendly except the one older lady at reception, she was not very accommodating when changing money. The beach is brown but great and lots of chairs. We only use the pool twice. Lots of returning guests. Foods got a little repetitive after 2 weeks.
